WOMO – Living & Mobility – integration of location-based mobility in the planning process

The project´s long-term goal is the development of a user-oriented, residential location based mobility service for urban areas. The aim of the probing project is to support multimodal transport choices already at the place of living. As such, location and resident based mobility services have to be bundled, easy to use and communicated consistently. New models have to be developed in order to interconnect planning, construction and operation of different mobility services with projects on the level of housing and urban districts.

Short Description

Starting point / motivation

Our personal mobility is strongly interconnected to the places where we are living. Housing and mobility issues are often separated from each other in planning processes. A recent amendment of Vienna's building code provides a reduction in the parking requirement for housing projects (currently 1 parking lot / accommodation). Reduced construction costs for garages may now be used for the implementation of location-based mobility services. New offers for multimodal mobility are not yet sufficiently taken into account in the planning process. The task is to identify common tasks in mobility and housing in order to define concrete possibilities for implementation.

Contents and goals

The main goal is to truly implement multimodal mobility in the planning process of objects and urban districts. Methods for:

Identification
bundling and
organisation

of location-based mobility services will be developed in order to meet individual mobility styles and ensure user acceptance of the provided services. The integration of existing sharing or pooling concepts will be explored. A range of services and infrastructures can be implemented such as:

integration of new vehicle concepts like cargo bikes, pedelec or urban light vehicles (eg eVienne)
electric mobility infrastructure
adequate parking infrastructure for existing and new types of vehicles
repair shops, service stations, information terminals, charging infrastructure, lockers, participation tools and more.

Methods

Intention of the research project from a methodological point of view is the mutual approach to the task from a planning and user-oriented perspective. The starting point of all considerations is the resident and its individual mobility style connected to his own living situation. The following methods are used:

Results and Conclusions

The project result is a new model for integrated and future-oriented design a location based urban mobility system. The model connects existing technologies and approaches of integrated mobility and transfers it to the level of housing projects and district planning. A modular range of services for developers and local authorities will be developed in order to offer their residents personal mobility services together with housing.
